Rep. Don Beyer, who represents Virginia’s 8th district in the U.S. Congress, warned of worsening job losses and economic impacts in a series of tweets posted on July 19, 2025.

In his first tweet at 15:46 UTC, Beyer stated, “Worse, so many of those we know have lost their jobs are not showing up in this data yet. Many terminations were set to take effect on a delay, or put on hold by courts until this month. Thousands more firings have just been announced.

This is going to get worse.”

Six minutes later, Beyer addressed the broader implications for Virginia’s economy: “It isn’t only public sector job losses. The federal government has a big footprint in Virginia that also includes grants, education and research funding, and more, all under attack by Trump. Forecasts warn these cuts will spread through Virginia’s economy” (posted at 15:52 UTC).

Shortly after, he linked recent developments to state business rankings: “That’s a big part of why CNBC downgraded Virginia in its rankings of top states for business last week:” (posted at 15:54 UTC).

Beyer’s remarks come amid ongoing concerns about delayed and pending job terminations across sectors in Virginia. He highlighted the role of federal employment and funding—including grants for education and research—in the state’s economy and suggested that policies under former President Donald Trump were contributing to cutbacks with broad regional effects.

Virginia’s economic landscape has long been influenced by federal government activity due to its proximity to Washington D.C., with significant employment tied to both direct public sector jobs and federally funded programs.

Beyer has represented Virginia’s 8th District since replacing Jim Moran in 2015. Born in Trieste in 1950 and residing in Alexandria, Beyer graduated from Williams College with a BA in 1972.
