U.S. Representative Don Beyer, who represents Virginia’s 8th district, recently posted a series of statements on social media addressing congressional stock trading and federal oversight of artificial intelligence (AI). In his posts, Beyer outlined his support for a ban on stock trading by members of Congress and criticized recent actions by President Trump regarding AI regulation.
On December 11, 2025, Beyer stated his position on congressional stock trading: “I support a ban on Members of Congress trading stocks, and just signed the discharge petition to force a vote.”
The following day, Beyer commented on an executive order related to AI issued by President Trump. On December 12, he wrote: “President Trump’s AI order is an attempt to kill responsible safety reforms passed by states, which would create a lawless Wild West environment for AI companies that puts Americans at risk. This is a terrible idea. My statement: https://t.co/lbBDEJwk75”
Shortly after, Beyer elaborated further on the subject of AI regulation: “Congress has been slow to respond to the AI revolution and in the absence of a strong federal response, states are wisely taking the lead to create guardrails and protect the public. Trump’s attempt to undo this progress without providing any federal regulatory protections”
Beyer has represented Virginia’s 8th District in Congress since 2015, succeeding Jim Moran. He was born in Trieste in 1950 and currently resides in Alexandria. His academic background includes graduating from Williams College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1972.
These statements come amid ongoing national discussions about ethics in government and regulatory responses to emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.
