Rep. Don Beyer, a sitting member of the U.S. Congress representing Virginia’s 8th district since 2015, expressed his concerns on social media about recent economic trends. Providing his analysis of recent economic reports, Beyer highlighted issues such as inflation and declining employment figures.

In a tweet from May 1, Beyer referred to a report showing “inflation rising even before we see the worst impacts of Trump’s tariffs.” He noted a sharp decline in private sector hiring from April and a fall in consumer confidence to a three-decade low. According to Beyer, consumer expectations are currently worse than during the pandemic.

Continuing on the same day, Beyer remarked on the stock market, saying “Trump had the worst stock market performance to start a presidency in 50 years.” He cited worsening recession forecasts while accusing former President Trump of attempting to deflect blame for the economic situation, despite earlier promises of prosperity.

Beyer further criticized Trump’s policies, opining that “Trump inherited a strong economy and is running it into the ground with stupid and disastrous tariffs.” He criticized Republicans in Congress for not taking action against these economic measures.

Don Beyer was born in the Free Territory of Trieste in 1950 and currently resides in Alexandria. He graduated from Williams College in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
