Early voting opens March 6 for Alexandria’s special election set for April

Early voting for the April 21, 2026, Special Election in the City of Alexandria will begin on March 6. The election includes a City Council race and a proposed statewide constitutional amendment. All qualified voters in Alexandria can participate.

Registered voters in Virginia have the option to vote by mail or in person. Early in-person voting is available at the Office of Voter Registration & Elections, located at 132 N. Royal St., Suite 100. Voting hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with additional extended hours on select dates leading up to the deadline of Saturday, April 18, at 5 p.m.

Voters choosing to vote by mail must submit their applications by 5 p.m. on Friday, April 10. Applications can be submitted online via vote.elections.virginia.gov, downloaded from the City’s Elections webpage, or requested by phone at 703.746.4050. Completed ballots need to be returned to the Office of Voter Registration & Elections by 7 p.m. on Election Day or postmarked by April 21 and received by noon on April 24.

Ballot drop boxes will be present at all polling locations on Election Day from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., and a secure outdoor drop box is available around the clock outside the Office of Voter Registration & Elections until polls close.

The normal voter registration deadline for this election is April 14, after which Same Day Registration is permitted through Election Day. Residents can register or update their status online at vote.elections.virginia.gov.

Alexandria provides various services within its independent city boundaries and operates under a council-manager form of government where council members select a manager for daily operations (official website). In addition, Alexandria supports local identity through museums and historic sites that interpret social and cultural history (official website) and maintains resources such as the Alexandria Black History Museum documenting African American heritage (official website).
