Sugarland Elementary School, Sterling Elementary School, Sully Elementary School, and Guilford Elementary School have been named Virginia Community Schools by the Virginia Department of Education. This recognition highlights Loudoun County Public Schools’ ongoing work to address students’ academic and non-academic needs.

The selection comes after a comprehensive application and review process at the state level. According to the school division, these schools showed a strong commitment to the Virginia Community School model and consistently worked to implement practices that support student achievement in and out of the classroom.

The Virginia Community School approach aims to boost academic performance by providing resources such as basic needs support, family and community engagement opportunities, emotional and mental health services, and activities designed to increase student motivation.

The criteria for designation were developed with input from experienced community school professionals along with members of the Virginia Department of Education Community Schools Task Force. The goal was to create clear standards for consistency and quality throughout Virginia.

This year, nearly 60 sites across 13 different school divisions received the designation. The announcement signals a growing interest in approaches that involve collaboration among schools, families, and communities to enhance educational opportunities statewide.

A full list of recognized schools can be found on the Virginia Department of Education’s Virginia Community Schools webpage.
