Families have a final opportunity this summer to participate in Family Day at Gadsby’s Tavern Museum on Sunday, August 31, from 2 to 5 p.m. The event takes place at the museum located at 134 N. Royal Street. Tickets can be reserved online at https://shop.alexandriava.gov/Events.aspx.

Family Day features Junior Docents—students from grades four through seven—who guide tours and share stories about Alexandria’s early history. The program includes hands-on activities such as chocolate making and demonstrations of period clothing. These activities are included with regular museum admission, while City of Alexandria residents may attend for free.

The program aims to help families learn how Alexandria was connected to the wider world and about the diverse individuals who lived and worked in the area. Visitors from previous years have responded positively to the Junior Docents’ involvement, calling it an “exciting treat” that adds a “fun element” to their visit.

Gadsby’s Tavern Museum played a significant role in Alexandria’s social and political life during America’s formation in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The tavern hosted prominent guests, including George Washington, for events such as balls and meetings under the management of John Wise and John Gadsby. Today, the museum is owned and operated by the City of Alexandria.
