Government Island Park is temporarily closed after a water main break, with Stafford County officials announcing on April 9 that the park will remain shut until at least Friday morning. Repair crews are currently working on the site, and the county expects to complete repairs and reopen the park by Friday, April 10. Updates about reopening will be provided by Stafford County Government.

The closure affects local residents who use Government Island Park for recreation and community activities. The park is a notable public space in Stafford County, which also supports a large school system and growing population.

Stafford County Public Schools District enrolled 31,700 students during the 2023-24 school year according to data from the Virginia Department of Education. Brooke Point High School had the highest enrollment among the county’s schools during this period, with 2,242 students according to state records.

White students made up the largest ethnic group in Stafford County schools in 2023-24, totaling 12,332 students or about 38.9% of total enrollment; Hispanic students followed with approximately one quarter of all students as reported by state education statistics. The overall student body grew by 1.7% compared to last year’s total of 31,160 according to official figures.

Rising Star Early Childhood Education Center at Melchers had more pre-kindergarten enrollees than any other location in Stafford County during this time frame—292 children attended there, making up over half of all pre-kindergarteners in local schools according to education data. For kindergarteners specifically, Rocky Run Elementary School welcomed more than any other elementary school with an intake of 148 new students—or about one out of every thirteen kindergartners across the district state records show.

Officials say they will continue monitoring repair progress at Government Island Park and notify residents as soon as it is safe for public use again.
