Rep. Don Beyer, who has served in the U.S. Congress representing Virginia’s 8th District since 2015, recently addressed issues concerning civil liberties and political intimidation through a series of tweets. Beyer, born in Trieste in 1950 and currently residing in Alexandria, expressed his views on the current state of affairs under the Trump Administration.

On May 19, 2025, Beyer commented on the detention of individuals for exercising their First Amendment rights. He stated that “Others are still detained simply for exercising their First Amendment rights.” He further described these events as an assault on basic freedoms and emphasized the need to defend values and fight against such injustices until those detained are freed.

The following day, on May 20, 2025, Beyer posted a succinct tweet saying “Too late.” The tweet included links to other content without further elaboration.

Later that same day, Beyer accused the Trump Administration of using unfounded political charges to intimidate members of Congress from performing lawful oversight. In his words: “The Trump Administration is trying to use baseless, nakedly political charges to intimidate Members of Congress out of doing lawful oversight because they have many abuses to hide.” He also expressed solidarity with fellow congress member @RepLaMonica by stating “I stand with @RepLaMonica, we have your back.”

Beyer graduated from Williams College in 1972 with a BA and succeeded Jim Moran as a representative in Congress.
