Rep. Don Beyer, who has been serving in the U.S. Congress representing Virginia’s 8th district since 2015, recently shared a series of tweets addressing significant political and social issues. Born in Trieste in 1950, Beyer is an alumnus of Williams College and resides in Alexandria.

On February 8, 2025, Rep. Beyer expressed concerns about the impact of a “Musk-Trump shutdown” on medical research funding. He emphasized that this could pose a major threat to finding cures for diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer’s. He stated, “If you or a loved one has cancer or Alzheimer’s, or are in clinical trials for these or other diseases, you should know the Musk-Trump shutdown of medical research funding is a major threat to our ability to find cures.”

Later that day, he commented on potential policy changes by former President Trump regarding immigration. He noted that although Trump had not yet reintroduced the Muslim Ban due to procedural considerations, it was likely forthcoming. Beyer urged Republicans to act courageously against this move: “Trump hasn’t reintroduced the Muslim Ban yet because the White House is following a process to try and avoid having it struck down in court (as it was in his first term, twice), but it is coming.”

On February 9, 2025, Rep. Beyer addressed comments made by Elon Musk concerning Social Security. Musk reportedly described Social Security as “a ripoff,” which Beyer linked to broader objectives by the Musk-Trump Administration targeting Social Security. He accused Republicans of compliance and called for public awareness: “Elon Musk shares the message that Social Security is ‘a ripoff.’ The Musk-Trump Administration has their sights on Social Security.”
