History enthusiasts in Alexandria have the opportunity to attend two events organized by Historic Alexandria this weekend. Both events are open to the public and tickets can be purchased online at https://shop.alexandriava.gov/.
The first event, Tavern Games Night: The Alexandria Canal and Commerce, will take place at Gadsby’s Tavern Museum on Friday, September 26 from 7 to 9 p.m. For $10, attendees can participate in a pub trivia night focused on the history of the Alexandria Canal and local commerce. The evening includes a brief presentation about how the canal operated from 1843 to 1886 and its impact on daily life in nineteenth-century Alexandria. Tavern games and a cash bar will also be available.
The second event is the Specialty Tour: Outlandish Apothecary at Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum on Sunday, September 28 from 11 a.m. to noon. This tour costs $15 for general admission or $12 for Historic Alexandria members. It explores herbal medicines mentioned in Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series and examines the role of apothecaries and women in eighteenth-century medicine. Organizers recommend this program for adults age eighteen and older.
The Office of Historic Alexandria manages eight museums and historic sites in the city as well as archives, archaeology projects, tours, exhibits, and public programs designed to preserve local history. According to its statement: “Through powerful storytelling and confronting the City’s past, Historic Alexandria enriches the present and inspires the future. We enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors and serve as a partner in the City’s equity and inclusion initiatives.”
