Jeffrey Thomas Gary, a 35-year-old Fairfax County resident, was sentenced on March 20 by the Alexandria Circuit Court to one year of active incarceration after pleading guilty to two felony counts of abduction and one misdemeanor count of sexual battery.
The sentencing follows attacks against two women at Metro stations in Alexandria on May 30, 2025. The case highlights public safety concerns related to random acts of violence in the community.
According to the official statement, Gary approached his first victim at Potomac Yard Metro station while she waited with her young daughter. He grabbed her and forced her to the ground before fleeing when her daughter intervened. Later that evening, he attacked a second woman near Braddock Road Metro station by placing his hand over her mouth and attempting to restrain her before she managed to escape. Police identified Gary using video surveillance and his SmartTrip card, leading to his arrest the following day.
On both felony abduction counts, the court sentenced Gary to ten years for each charge but suspended all except one year on conditions including good behavior and five years of supervised probation with mental health and substance abuse treatment. For sexual battery, he received twelve months in jail with all time suspended under similar conditions. All sentences run concurrently. A lifetime protective order was issued prohibiting contact with either victim.
The prosecution team included Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Jessica Best Smith and Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Harsh Voruganti. Detectives from both Metro Transit Police Department and Alexandria Police Department investigated the incidents.
Alexandria Commonwealth’s Attorney Bryan Porter said: “This offense involved every citizen’s nightmare: a nighttime attack on a victim apparently selected at random. My office argued for an active sentence of 5 years. While I understand that sentencing hearings are difficult and the Court must weigh competing factors in arriving at a just sentence, I am disappointed that the sentence imposed by the Court was less than that sought by my office, and I am concerned about the defendant’s danger of reoffending upon his release from incarceration.”
“My thoughts are with the survivors of these offenses. While a successful prosecution cannot address the immense impact of the crimes at issue, I sincerely hope that it might offer some solace and a chance for the survivors to move forward.”
Gary is currently held in Alexandria Adult Detention Center where he will serve out his sentence.
