Tonight, The Lyceum in Alexandria will host a lecture by Professor Peter Henriques titled “George Washington and Slavery.” The event will examine George Washington’s complex relationship with slavery, including his role as the only Founding Father to propose a plan to free his enslaved workers, while also living with and benefiting from slavery throughout his life. Professor Henriques will discuss the challenges Washington and the nation faced regarding slavery and what these reveal about both Washington and the country he helped to establish.
The lecture will begin at 7 p.m. at The Alexandria History Museum at The Lyceum, located at 201 South Washington Street in Alexandria. Tickets can be purchased online for $15 for the general public and $12 for Historic Alexandria members.
Following the lecture, there will be a book signing in the Museum Shop. Proceeds from this activity will benefit the Historic Alexandria Museums.
