Loudoun County Animal Services (LCAS) is organizing a fee-waived pet adoption event called “Home for the Holidays” on December 20 and 21, 2025. The event will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Animal Shelter located at 42225 Adoption Drive in Leesburg. During these two days, adoption fees for all available pets—including cats, kittens, dogs, rabbits, small animals, and livestock—will be waived.

Shelter Operations Manager Melissa Heard explained the importance of the event and its broader impact on regional animal welfare efforts. “We’re deeply grateful to be in a place where we don’t have to euthanize animals for space, but not all of our shelter partners are as fortunate. They face heartbreaking decisions every single day due to overcrowding and lack of local resources. For this event, we’ll be welcoming animals from some of these partner shelters to give them a chance at finding a home,” Heard said. “When you adopt one of these pets, you’re saving two lives- that of the pet you have adopted and that of the pet who now has a chance for shelter in their now-empty shelter kennel.”

The event will also feature additional activities such as a craft station for children and giveaways for all adopters. These giveaways include supplies, treats, and toys. LCAS notes that interested adopters can view available pets online through their website at loudoun.gov/animals. Although adoption fees are waived during this promotion, standard screening procedures will remain in place and most adoptions can be finalized on the same day.

All dogs, cats, and rabbits adopted from LCAS are spayed or neutered before leaving the shelter and come with a microchip registered to their new owner. Dogs and cats receive vaccinations appropriate for their age, while dogs also leave with vouchers for four free group training sessions. The shelter regularly offers various animals for adoption beyond cats and dogs—including hamsters, guinea pigs, birds, other small pets, and livestock.

More details about services provided by LCAS are available on their official website.
