Loudoun County will hold its final Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection event of 2025 on Saturday, November 15. The event will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Claude Moore Park in Sterling, located at 46150 Loudoun Park Lane. The county invites residents to bring HHW items from their homes for free disposal.
Accepted materials include fluorescent light bulbs, dry-cell batteries (excluding automobile batteries), oil-based paints and stains, varnish, paint thinner, mineral spirits, metal polish, rust remover, wood strippers and preservatives, furniture polish, waxes, sealants and solvents. Other accepted items are bleach, pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, fertilizer, pool chemicals, acids such as muriatic and sulfuric acid, ammonia, mercury products including thermometers and thermostats, gasoline and expired fuel. Residents can also bring auto cleaners and flushes, brake and transmission fluid, windshield washer fluid, fire extinguishers, moth balls, flea and tick products as well as photographic chemicals.
Anyone with an item not listed is encouraged to contact the county’s Waste Management Division at 703-771-5500 for guidance on whether it is accepted or if another disposal option is needed.
Residents should only bring HHW to the site during the scheduled date and time. Materials should not be dropped off at unattended locations. Each household may bring up to 15 gallons of liquid HHW (with containers no larger than five gallons each) and up to 40 pounds of solid HHW (also with containers no larger than five gallons). Proof of Loudoun County residency—such as a driver’s license or utility bill—is required.
Certain materials are not accepted at these events. These include motor oil, antifreeze, automobile batteries and propane tanks; these can be taken instead to the Loudoun County Solid Waste Management Facility in Leesburg. More information about landfill services is available at loudoun.gov/landfill.
Ammunition or explosives cannot be disposed of during this event; those seeking disposal information for such items should contact the Loudoun County Fire Marshal’s Office at 703-737-8600.
Electronics are also excluded from this collection but can be disposed of through other programs described online at loudoun.gov/electronics.
Medical waste and medications are not permitted either; details on proper disposal methods can be found at loudoun.gov/hhw.
Latex or water-based paint is considered non-hazardous; residents may take it directly to the landfill Monday through Saturday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., where standard fees apply.
Non-residential hazardous waste will not be accepted during this event. However businesses that generate less than 220 pounds per month may use the county’s Business Hazardous Waste Collection Program by visiting loudoun.gov/bhwp or calling 703-771-5500.
For safety reasons related to handling hazardous materials there will be a drive-through process; participants must remain in their vehicles while staff unloads acceptable items for disposal. Items should not be placed in sealed or tied plastic bags since staff cannot open them onsite.
The next scheduled HHW collection event will occur in March 2026; future dates will be posted online once confirmed.
