Loudoun County announced on April 13 that a groundbreaking ceremony will be held on April 20 to begin construction of a pedestrian and bicycle bridge for the Washington & Old Dominion (W&OD) Trail over Sterling Boulevard. The event is set for Monday, April 20, at 11:00 a.m. near the intersection of the W&OD Trail and Sterling Boulevard in Sterling.
The project aims to improve safety by separating trail users from roadway traffic at a location that currently sees about 2,000 crossings per day. Members of the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors and NOVA Parks, which manages the W&OD Trail, are scheduled to participate in the ceremonial start of construction.
The new bridge will serve pedestrians, bicyclists, horseback riders, and other trail users by providing an alternative to crossing busy Sterling Boulevard at street level. Construction is expected to be completed by spring 2028. Tree clearing and pre-construction activities such as erosion and sediment control have already started.
Throughout construction, the W&OD Trail will remain open and accessible. However, drivers on Sterling Boulevard and trail users may experience increased traffic disruptions including lane shifts or flagging operations intended to maintain safety during work periods. Both motorists and trail users are advised to use caution in this area and follow all posted signs.
More information about the project—including how to sign up for updates—is available at loudoun.gov/TrailOverpass on the Loudoun County website. Details about the W&OD Trail itself can be found through NOVA Parks.
