Loudoun County School Board reviews family engagement efforts, recognizes achievements at November meeting

The Loudoun County School Board convened on November 11, 2025, at the Loudoun County Public Schools Administrative Offices in Ashburn. All board members, including Chair Melinda Mansfield and Vice Chair Anne Donohue, were present for the session.

During a work session, the Department of Communications and Community Engagement reported on the Division of Family and Community Engagement’s (FACE) recent initiatives. The update covered programs such as family liaison support, translation services, Family Academy, FACE Teacher Cohort, Communities in Schools, and Community Schools. These efforts aim to improve collaboration between families and schools through school-based visits and cross-departmental work.

The Department of Teaching and Learning presented information about updates to mathematics course progressions and instructional practices. The presentation addressed new curriculum resources as well as changes related to Virginia House Bill 2686. Ongoing support for accelerated learners was also discussed.

The meeting included a recess for Veterans Day recognition. The Pledge of Allegiance and National Anthem were performed by the Loudoun County High School Chamber Choir.

In recognitions, Freedom High School was highlighted for its inclusive math practices focused on closing achievement gaps among students with disabilities and English Learners.

Student representative Tilly Thompson from Independence High School provided comments during the meeting.

Superintendent’s Report highlights included:

– School Nutrition Services hosted its second annual Food Show featuring 30 new breakfast items and lunch recipes developed with student input.
– Twelve LCPS schools received Purple Star designation for their support of military-connected students.
– North Star School was recognized for advancing non-traditional education.
– Division Counsel Wesley Allen was named a Leader in the Law by Virginia Lawyers Weekly.

Community members participated both virtually and in person during public comment sessions to address various topics before the board.

No action items were taken up at this meeting. Information items discussed included:

– A quarterly update from the Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC).
– Consideration of a staff recommendation to request $17,491,000 from the FY25 county year-end fund balance.
– Updates on inaugural agreements for Certified and Non-Certified Bargaining Units from Human Resources and Talent Development.
– Recommendation to delete Policy 8-19 regarding dismissal during the school day due to its incorporation into Policy 8140 adopted last year.
– Update on revisions to Policy 8155 concerning school assignments.
– Discussion about special permission requests for certain rising eighth through tenth-grade students affected by upcoming attendance zone changes.
– Dr. Linda Deans gave an update on realigning the Equity Committee’s structure with LCPS policies.

Following these discussions, board members entered a closed session. There were no committee reports or new business introduced before adjournment.
