Loudoun County will hold its next Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection event on Saturday, October 11, 2025. The event will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Leesburg Park and Ride located at 41951 Gourley Transit Drive in Leesburg. Residents of Loudoun County can bring hazardous waste items from their homes to the event at no cost.

Accepted materials include fluorescent light bulbs, dry-cell batteries (excluding automobile batteries), oil-based paints and stains, varnish, paint thinner, mineral spirits, metal polish, rust remover, wood strippers and preservatives, furniture polish, waxes, sealants and solvents. Other accepted items are bleach, pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, fertilizer, pool chemicals, acids such as muriatic and sulfuric acid, ammonia, mercury products including thermometers and thermostats, gasoline and expired fuel. Auto-related products like cleaners and fluids are also allowed along with fire extinguishers and certain hobby chemicals.

Residents with items not listed are encouraged to contact the county’s Waste Management Division at 703-771-5500 for guidance on disposal or alternative options. Materials should only be brought during the scheduled date and time; drop-offs outside of these times or at unattended sites are not permitted. Each household is limited to bringing up to 15 gallons of liquid HHW (with container sizes not exceeding five gallons) and up to 40 pounds of solid HHW (also in containers no larger than five gallons). Proof of Loudoun County residency is required.

Certain items are not accepted at these events. Motor oil, antifreeze, automobile batteries, propane tanks and similar pressurized tanks must be taken to the Loudoun County Solid Waste Management Facility instead. More information about landfill services can be found at https://www.loudoun.gov/landfill.

Ammunition or explosive materials are not accepted; residents seeking disposal information for these items should contact the Loudoun County Fire Marshal’s Office at 703-737-8600.

Electronics cannot be dropped off at HHW events; details on electronics recycling are available through https://www.loudoun.gov/electronics.

Medical waste or medications also cannot be disposed of during this event; disposal instructions for these materials can be found by visiting https://www.loudoun.gov/hhw.

Latex or water-based paint is considered non-hazardous but should still be brought to the landfill during regular business hours for a fee. Non-residential hazardous waste is not accepted at these events; businesses generating less than 220 pounds per month may find more information about proper disposal options by visiting https://www.loudoun.gov/bhwp or calling the county’s hotline.

For safety reasons related to handling hazardous materials, the collection will use a drive-through process where residents must remain in their vehicles while staff unloads accepted items. Items should not be packed in sealed or tied plastic bags because staff cannot open them during unloading.

The final Household Hazardous Waste event for Loudoun County in 2025 is scheduled for November 15 at Claude Moore Park in Sterling from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

For additional details about the program or upcoming events call 703-771-5500 or visit https://www.loudoun.gov/hhw.
