Loudoun County Public Schools Superintendent Aaron Spence addressed the school community following a shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The incident occurred during what is typically a time of excitement as students return to school.

“Today, our hearts are heavy as we learn of yet another school shooting—this time at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, Minnesota. What should be a back-to-school week of excitement and anticipation has been broken by violence and loss. On behalf of Loudoun County Public Schools, I extend our deepest sympathy to the students, families, educators, and community members who are facing this tragedy,” Spence said.

Spence reflected on the impact such events have on educators and parents. “As both an educator and a parent, I struggle with the reality that such events continue to occur in places meant to nurture and protect our children. This cannot become the world they inherit. Every child deserves to feel safe, supported, and free from fear when they walk into school.”

He emphasized that safety remains a top priority for Loudoun County schools. “Here in Loudoun County, safety remains our highest priority. Our Office of Safety and Security works daily with school leaders and local law enforcement to ensure strong emergency plans are in place. We also engage in regular training with staff and students to be prepared for the unthinkable—while at the same time focusing on prevention, care and connection.”

Spence noted that creating safe schools requires collaboration beyond just educators: “But creating safe schools is not the work of schools alone. Families and communities play a vital role in building a culture where students feel seen, supported, and heard. I encourage you to talk openly with your children and to share any concerns.”

The superintendent shared resources for families seeking guidance on discussing violence or needing support:

Families whose children need additional support can contact LCPS mental health professionals by emailing SMHSleadershipteam@lcps.org with their phone number; someone from the team will respond within 24 hours.

“We cannot accept that schools should ever be places of fear. Together, we must remain steadfast in ensuring every student has a safe environment where they can learn, grow and thrive. Our children deserve nothing less,” Spence concluded.
