The National Science Foundation (NSF) will remain in Alexandria, Virginia, according to an announcement made by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) on November 14, 2025. The agency will relocate its headquarters to 401 Dulany Street in the Carlyle neighborhood, sharing a campus with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
Earlier this year, GSA revealed that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) would be moving into NSF’s current building at 2415 Eisenhower Avenue. This transition will bring approximately 2,700 jobs to Alexandria and mark HUD as the first cabinet-level federal agency based in the city.
City officials emphasized that bringing HUD to Alexandria should not result in losing NSF. The recent decision ensures both agencies have a place in the city and allows NSF’s workforce to continue their mission within a community of other federal and private sector employees.
“We are thrilled to say that NSF will stay in the City of Alexandria and that it will continue its role growing the innovation hub in Carlyle, collaborating directly with USPTO,” said Alexandria Mayor Alyia Gaskins.
NSF first moved its headquarters and staff to Alexandria in 2017. With this latest move, about 1,600 jobs—comprising federal employees and visiting scientists from research institutions—will remain in the city.
“Alexandria’s economy is supported by a number of anchors we have recruited to the City — employers who themselves contribute to our economy, but importantly also catalyze spin-off activity like hotel stays, restaurant visits, and contractor businesses who locate nearby,” said AEDP President and CEO Stephanie Landrum. “For that reason, the City aggressively pursued the NSF headquarters in 2017 and was vigilant in efforts to retain them in 2025.”
City representatives plan to coordinate with GSA and property owners over the coming months to facilitate a smooth transition for NSF staff as they move into their new offices.
