Ninety-one seniors from Arlington Public Schools (APS) have been recognized as National Merit Commended Scholars by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). The announcement was made last week.
The students earned this distinction based on their performance in the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Each year, more than two-thirds of about 34,000 high school students who take the PSAT/NMSQT are named Commended Students. According to NMSC, these students are honored for their “outstanding ability and potential for academic success in college,” and receive Letters of Commendation through their schools.
The APS students recognized this year come from several high schools across the district:
– Arlington Career Center: Gabriel A. Barragan, Henry T. Denola, Giulia C. Galvao, Noah B. Gunville, Adam J. Scally, Lauren A. Sproles, Jake C. Stewart, Eimi T. Tuttle, Elijah R. Varona
– H-B Woodlawn: Tug Donaghy, Charlotte Fletcher, Trevor Fullen, Henry Gould, Annabelle Hoppin, Nelle Lloyd, Bethany Panza, Graham Satrom, Evan Thorn
– Wakefield: Matthew S. Blaha, Charles M. Gibb, Nikita A. Kolesnikov, Lara M. Oh, Jack S. Oliver, Greyson Schroeher, Jonah E. Spiggle, Josephine G. Van Hoey, Leah L. Wargo
– Washington-Liberty: Bolor Amarbayar and 38 other students
– Yorktown: Alec Wanat and 29 other students
The National Merit Scholarship Program is an annual competition that began in 1955 and is conducted by NMSC without government assistance. U.S high school students enter the program by taking the PSAT/NMSQT each year; over 1.3 million entrants participate annually after meeting published entry requirements.
