Paul Stoddard has been appointed as the new Director of the Department of Planning & Zoning for the City of Alexandria, according to an announcement from City Manager James F. Parajon.

Stoddard brings experience in city planning and a collaborative approach to his new role. He previously worked with the City of Falls Church, Virginia, where he served as Planning Director for seven years. During his tenure there, he led updates to long-range city plans, developed short-term strategies, secured funding through grants, and managed development proposal reviews. His work emphasized aligning municipal actions with community values and advancing shared goals.

“Planning and Zoning plays a vital role in shaping Alexandria’s future while preserving the qualities that make our city unique. This work touches every resident, from how we grow and develop to how we protect our historic character and neighborhoods,” said City Manager James Parajon. “Paul brings both deep experience and a collaborative approach to this important role, and I am confident his leadership will help us balance today’s needs with a shared vision for a resilient and thriving Alexandria.”

Stoddard holds a Master’s Degree in City Planning from Virginia Tech and is an Alexandria resident. His professional interests include economic development, civic engagement, community development, and organizational health.

He will begin his duties as Director on September 29, 2025.
