Rep. Don Beyer, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Virginia’s 8th district since 2015, recently shared insights on potential impacts of proposed Medicaid cuts through a series of tweets. Beyer, who was born in Trieste in 1950 and resides in Alexandria, highlighted concerns regarding the largest proposed reduction to Medicaid funding.

On July 3, 2025, Rep. Don Beyer tweeted that “Medicaid will be cut by over $1 trillion, according to the Congressional Budget Office, the largest Medicaid cut ever.” This statement reflects significant budgetary changes projected for Medicaid.

In another tweet posted shortly after on the same day, Beyer noted that “These Medicaid cuts may force the closure of over 300 rural hospitals nationwide, according to the Sheps Center at UNC.” This prediction underscores potential challenges facing healthcare facilities in rural areas.

Continuing his discussion on July 3, Beyer further stated that “The Medicaid cuts may force the closure of as many as 1 in 4 nursing homes across the United States, according to the American Health Care Association.” This highlights additional risks posed to long-term care facilities due to funding reductions.

Don Beyer’s educational background includes a BA from Williams College obtained in 1972.
