Rep. Don Beyer, a U.S. Congressman representing Virginia’s 8th District since 2015, recently addressed significant issues through his social media platform. His statements highlighted concerns regarding international conflict and domestic civil rights.

On March 19, 2025, Rep. Beyer expressed his views on the escalation of conflict in Gaza, describing it as “a tragedy in the making.” He attributed this situation to Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s decision to reignite hostilities in the region. On March 20, 2025, Rep. Beyer raised awareness about the detention of Badar Khan Suri, a Georgetown postdoctoral fellow and one of his constituents. Suri was detained outside his home in Rosslyn without being accused of any crime. Rep. Beyer stated that this situation represents “a clear violation of his constitutional rights” and called for Suri’s release here.

In a subsequent tweet on the same day, Rep. Beyer provided further details about Mr. Suri’s arrest. He noted that Suri is lawfully present in the country and has not been charged with any crime yet was arrested by masked authorities outside his Northern Virginia home where he resides with his American citizen wife and children here.
