Rep. Don Beyer, who represents Virginia’s 8th district in the U.S. Congress, has raised concerns about a recent sewage spill into the Potomac River, highlighting both immediate and long-term environmental risks.
On February 17, 2026, Beyer posted on his official account: “The recent sewage spill into the Potomac River is a serious environmental and public health concern. My office has been coordinating with the appropriate agencies since first learning of this spill to fix the Potomac Interceptor and ensure all risks are addressed.”
In a subsequent post on the same day, he detailed efforts for federal support: “After we learned of the leak, I submitted a request with @RepRaskin and @EleanorNorton for urgent federal funding to repair and modernize the Potomac Interceptor, and begin rehabilitating the damage.”
Beyer also emphasized infrastructure issues related to the incident: “Beyond addressing immediate impacts, we must also address the root cause of the spill. The failure of the Potomac Interceptor wastewater network underscores serious infrastructure vulnerabilities that must be promptly fixed to prevent a disaster like this from happening again.”
Don Beyer has served as a member of Congress representing Virginia’s 8th District since 2015, succeeding Jim Moran. Born in Trieste in 1950 and currently residing in Alexandria, Beyer graduated from Williams College in 1972 with a BA.
