Rep. Don Beyer, a U.S. Congressman representing Virginia’s 8th district since 2015, addressed several national issues in a series of posts on May 5, 2026.
On the topic of nuclear risk and energy prices, Beyer criticized former President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), stating on his Twitter account: “If the President wanted to curb nuclear risk, withdrawing from the JCPOA clearly moved us in the opposite direction. Now Americans are paying the price of Trump’s reckless decisions with a 40% spike in gas prices – hardly a ‘small price’ to pay.” This comment came amid ongoing debates about U.S. foreign policy and its impact on domestic fuel costs.
Later that day, Beyer commented on reports regarding oversight within federal immigration agencies. He wrote: “This reporting is deeply concerning especially in light of the news that the Trump administration is shutting down the office tasked with investigating abuse while ICE and CBP continue violating basic human rights and federal detention standards, an unacceptable and deliberate”. The post referenced concerns about accountability at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
In another statement related to artificial intelligence regulation, Beyer noted state-level initiatives addressing AI risks due to what he described as inadequate federal oversight: “In a Wild West AI environment without minimally acceptable federal guardrails, states have taken the lead to address real and growing risks – and that’s a good thing. Until there’s a strong federal framework, states must retain the ability to protect the American public.”
Beyer was born in Trieste in 1950 and currently resides in Alexandria. He graduated from Williams College with a BA in 1972.
