Rep. Don Beyer, who represents Virginia’s 8th district in the U.S. Congress, addressed the ongoing government shutdown and health care costs in a series of tweets posted on October 3, 2025.

In one tweet, Beyer criticized Republican leadership and former President Trump over fiscal priorities, writing, “Trump and Republican leaders want to give Argentina a $20 billion bailout but won’t spend a penny to stop Americans’ health care costs from skyrocketing. ‘America first.'” (posted October 3, 2025).

Later that day, Beyer provided constituents with practical support during the shutdown by sharing a resource page: “I’ve put together a webpage where you can find resources to help you while portions of the government remain closed. It’s my hope that the resources provided below will address your questions and concerns.” (posted October 3, 2025).

He also attributed responsibility for the shutdown to former President Trump and Republicans in Congress: “President Trump and Republicans have shut down the government because they refuse to enact a deal that protects Americans from skyrocketing health care cost increases. I’ll keep working to end this shutdown, but please know that my office remains open and is here to help.” (posted October 3, 2025).

Don Beyer has served as U.S. Representative for Virginia’s 8th District since 2015 after succeeding Jim Moran. He was born in Trieste in 1950 and resides in Alexandria. Beyer graduated from Williams College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1972.
