Rep. Don Beyer, a U.S. Congressman representing Virginia’s 8th district since 2015, used his social media platform to criticize the Trump Administration and Republican leaders over their handling of a federal government shutdown in October 2025.
Shortly after, he reassured federal workers regarding their pay during the shutdown, stating on October 7, “Federal employees should know that these threats are hollow, and they will be paid when this shutdown ends, as the law requires.”
On October 8, Beyer criticized House Republican leaders for not taking action to resolve the shutdown: “Republican leaders are now saying they will keep the House in recess for the FOURTH week in a row as the shutdown drags on. Instead of negotiating a deal to end the shut down, protect Americans’ health care, and stop price increases, they’re taking a month-long vacation.”
Beyer’s statements come amid ongoing disputes in Congress over budget negotiations and federal funding. As required by law, federal employees typically receive back pay after government shutdowns conclude.
Don Beyer has served as a member of Congress since 2015 after succeeding Jim Moran. Born in Trieste in 1950 and currently residing in Alexandria, Beyer graduated from Williams College in 1972.
