Rep. Don Beyer, who has served in the U.S. Congress representing Virginia’s 8th District since 2015, recently expressed his opposition to a proposed legislative bill through a series of tweets. Born in Trieste in 1950 and currently residing in Alexandria, Beyer is known for his vocal stance on various issues affecting Americans.
On July 2, 2025, Beyer criticized what he referred to as the “Big Ugly Bill,” highlighting that it “multiplies ICE’s budget by over 20 times,” equating its funding to that of the Marine Corps. He described this increase as a means to enhance “rogue, authoritarian MAGA police state tactics at an unprecedented scale” and declared his intention to vote against it. In another tweet posted on July 3, 2025, Beyer raised concerns about the potential impact of the bill on food assistance programs like SNAP, which supports “42 million Americans at or below the poverty line.” He warned that under Trump’s proposal, these benefits could be reduced or eliminated entirely, leading to increased hunger among children while financing tax cuts for billionaires. The complete statement is available here.
Later that day, Beyer addressed further consequences of the Republican-backed bill in a subsequent tweet. He stated that it would negatively affect millions by removing their healthcare coverage and reducing food assistance. He called upon four Republican colleagues to oppose this legislation for the benefit of American citizens. His message can be viewed here.
As an alumnus of Williams College with a BA degree earned in 1972, Beyer’s political career has been marked by advocacy for policies aimed at supporting vulnerable populations.
