Rep. Don Beyer, who has served in the U.S. Congress representing Virginia’s 8th district since 2015, recently expressed his concerns regarding a tax bill advanced by Ways and Means Republicans. In a series of tweets on May 14, 2025, Beyer highlighted key points about the bill and its implications.

On May 14, Rep. Beyer tweeted that “Today Ways and Means Republicans advanced a bill to cut taxes for the rich while raising taxes for many working Americans.” He noted that Democrats engaged in over 17 hours of efforts aimed at protecting health care, reducing costs, and supporting working individuals. Conversely, he criticized Republicans for prioritizing the wealthy here.

In another tweet posted shortly after, Beyer stated that “At every turn, Republicans voted down amendments designed to prevent the majority of benefits of their tax bill from flowing to rich people.” According to him, these rejected amendments included measures to close the carried interest loophole and restore pre-Trump tax rates for high-income earners here.

Furthermore, Rep. Beyer commented on Republican actions concerning estate taxes: “They voted to protect an expansion of the estate tax,” which he argued benefits only estates valued over $25 million at substantial fiscal cost. He also mentioned that Republicans dismissed an amendment meant to block such tax cuts from providing benefits here.

Born in Trieste in 1950 and residing in Alexandria today, Don Beyer holds a BA from Williams College obtained in 1972.
