Rep. Don Beyer, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Virginia’s 8th district since 2015, expressed concerns through a series of tweets regarding recent legislative decisions by Republicans. The tweets were posted on May 14, 2025.
In his first tweet, Beyer highlighted that Republicans had rejected Democratic amendments aimed at protecting Americans’ health care. He noted that new nonpartisan estimates indicated nearly 14 million people could lose their coverage due to this legislation. Beyer stated that “Republicans voted against amendments to prevent these life-threatening cuts.”
In another tweet from the same day, Beyer pointed out Republican opposition to Democratic amendments designed to halt what he described as “Trump’s trade war” and attacks on American energy. According to Beyer, this decision would sustain higher prices and negatively impact the American clean energy industry while increasing electric bills.
Lastly, in a subsequent post, Beyer commented on distribution tables revealing that tens of millions of working Americans might face a tax increase in 2029 under the proposed Republican bill. He criticized the temporary nature of provisions addressing taxes on tips and overtime pay compared to permanent tax cuts for the wealthiest one percent.
Don Beyer was born in Trieste in 1950 and resides in Alexandria. He graduated from Williams College with a BA in 1972.
