Rep. Don Beyer, who represents Virginia’s 8th district in the U.S. Congress, has posted a series of critical statements on his social media account regarding recent economic developments under former President Donald Trump’s policies.

On September 5, 2025, Beyer wrote: “Trump promised the higher costs from his tariffs would lead to a manufacturing boom, but with his tariffs in place we are actually *losing* manufacturing jobs at an alarming pace in 2025. This was the whole point of Trump’s tariffs, and it’s backfiring.”

In a subsequent post later that day, he added: “The billionaires raking in a massive windfall from Trump’s tax cuts are thrilled, but for everyone else this economy is getting scary. Republicans could stop this at any time by working with Democrats to stop Trump’s destructive tariffs, but they refuse.” (September 5, 2025).

Beyer also criticized the Trump Administration’s approach to unemployment statistics. On September 5, 2025, he stated: “The Trump Administration’s message to 7.4 million unemployed Americans is that ‘statistically’ they are ‘nonexistent.’ A stunningly awful and dishonest thing to say.”

Don Beyer has represented Virginia’s 8th District since replacing Jim Moran in 2015 and resides in Alexandria. Born in Trieste in 1950 and a graduate of Williams College with a BA earned in 1972, Beyer has been vocal about economic issues affecting his constituents.

These posts come amid ongoing debates over tariff policy and its effects on American manufacturing jobs as well as the distributional impact of federal tax cuts enacted during the Trump administration.
