Rep. Don Beyer, who represents Virginia’s 8th district in the U.S. Congress, addressed recent legislative developments regarding tariffs imposed by former President Trump in a series of posts on February 11, 2026.

In his first message, Beyer described the significance of a recent vote: “This was a very important vote tonight. Here’s why.

For the past year Trump’s illegal tariffs have crushed our economic growth, hit American families with higher costs, killed the very manufacturing jobs we were told they would multiply, and alienated our closest allies. 1/” (posted February 11, 2026).

He continued by acknowledging bipartisan support for challenging these tariffs: “This vote was heartening- a handful of Republicans finally stood up to Trump to put a stop to this madness.

Let’s hope more join them as we move on to consider measures to terminate tariffs on Canada and other key allies and trading partners soon. 2/” (posted February 11, 2026).

Beyer also criticized what he characterized as efforts by most Republicans to relinquish Congressional authority over trade policy: “At the same time, most Republicans again tried to surrender Congress’ power as a coequal branch of government to check a president who is behaving like a mad king.

The trade powers Trump is illegally usurping are expressly granted to Congress under the Constitution. 3/” (posted February 11, 2026).

Beyer has represented Virginia’s 8th District since replacing Jim Moran in 2015 and resides in Alexandria. He was born in Trieste in 1950 and graduated from Williams College in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
