Rep. Don Beyer, who represents Virginia’s 8th district in the U.S. Congress, used his social media platform on July 15 and 16, 2025, to criticize former President Donald Trump’s tariff policies and their impact on inflation and consumer prices.

On July 15, Beyer posted: “The White House is telling you not to believe your eyes and wallets as Trump’s tariffs raise prices and inflation spikes. The costs of Trump’s tariffs are being paid by the American people. And inflation IS rising.”

Later that day, he added: “This morning: government data shows Trump’s tariffs are driving prices increases and pushing inflation higher. This afternoon: Trump announces a new 19% tariff on Indonesia, a top-25 trading partner of the U.S. Americans will see even higher costs thanks to Trump.”

On July 16, Beyer followed up with a brief message referencing his earlier posts: “Everyone getting this?”

Beyer has served in Congress since replacing Jim Moran in 2015 and currently resides in Alexandria. Born in Trieste in 1950, he graduated from Williams College with a BA in 1972.

The recent announcement referenced by Beyer involves the imposition of a new tariff on Indonesia, which is among the United States’ top-25 trading partners.
