Rep. Don Beyer, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Virginia’s 8th district since 2015, recently shared several statements on social media addressing issues related to American diplomacy and individual rights. Beyer has been an active political figure, succeeding Jim Moran and holding his congressional seat for a decade.

On May 19, 2025, Beyer reaffirmed his commitment to the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) by stating “I will continue to support the United States Institute of Peace and the dedicated professionals who carry out its essential work.”

In another tweet from the same day, he highlighted a legal decision that protects nonprofit organizations, saying it “also threatened the independence of more than 232,000 other 501(c)(3) non-profits across the country,” adding that it “undermined American diplomacy.” Beyer emphasized that “this decision restores the rule of law and protects the Institute’s ability to fulfill its mission.”

Later on May 19, Rep. Beyer expressed joy over Dr. Badar Khan Suri’s release after what he described as an unjust detention in Texas under the Trump Administration. He remarked that “the Trump Administration persecuted him and others to spread fear on American campuses,” but noted relief that “a judge halted it,” concluding with his pleasure at Dr. Suri’s return home.

As a seasoned congressman with deep ties to Virginia’s 8th District and personal roots tracing back to Trieste, Italy, Beyer’s advocacy continues to impact various spheres including peace efforts and educational environments across America.
