Rep. Don Beyer, who represents Virginia’s 8th district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of tweets on August 14, 2025, addressing recent crime trends and federal law enforcement actions in Washington, D.C.

In his initial post, Beyer acknowledged local concerns about public safety: “There *is* crime in D.C., it’s fallen in recent years but all of us who live or work here want to make the city safer.

But look at what Trump is actually doing. These aren’t actions intended to truly reduce crime—” (August 14, 2025).

Beyer followed up with criticism of visible federal policing efforts: “National Guard standing around for ‘visibility’ in tourist areas, lots of federal police patrolling spots popular with visitors for traffic enforcement, law-abiding locals harassed with ‘papers please’ stops on major thoroughfares and outside restaurants.” (August 14, 2025).

He concluded by suggesting that the focus on highly trafficked areas was designed for optics rather than substantive safety improvements: “Focusing the federal presence in areas where they will be seen by tourists and the media gives the game away.” (August 14, 2025).

Beyer has represented Virginia’s 8th District since replacing Jim Moran in 2015 and currently resides in Alexandria. Born in Trieste in 1950 and a graduate of Williams College (1972), Beyer has consistently engaged with issues affecting both his constituents and neighboring Washington, D.C.
