Rep. Don Beyer, who represents Virginia’s 8th district in the U.S. Congress, publicly commented on a recent Supreme Court decision regarding tariffs imposed during former President Donald Trump’s administration. On February 20, 2026, Beyer shared his views in a series of posts on social media.

In one post, Beyer stated, “SCOTUS just confirmed what has always been clear. Trump’s tariffs were an abuse of the law, American consumers and American businesses. Refunds should follow.” (February 20, 2026).

He continued to address the impact of the tariffs in another message: “While this is a win for the American people and American businesses who will no longer have to pay these taxes, much of the damage is done.

Manufacturers closed their doors and let go of workers as their costs skyrocketed. Small businesses have shuttered, and those that” (February 20, 2026).

Beyer also criticized members of the Supreme Court perceived as supportive of Trump: “But even Trump’s Supreme Court allies, who have bent over backwards to give him unprecedented powers over and over again, had to admit that his tariffs are unconstitutional and illegal.” (February 20, 2026).

The context for Beyer’s remarks centers on a Supreme Court ruling that determined certain tariffs implemented under President Trump were unlawful. These tariffs had previously led to increased costs for American manufacturers and consumers. Many businesses reportedly faced closures or layoffs due to rising expenses.

Don Beyer has served as a member of Congress since 2015 after succeeding Jim Moran. He was born in Trieste in 1950 and currently resides in Alexandria. Beyer graduated from Williams College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1972.
