Rep. Don Beyer, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Virginia’s 8th district, has expressed significant concerns regarding recent developments at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). In a series of tweets, Beyer highlighted the impact on constituents and potential global repercussions.

On February 8, 2025, Rep. Beyer shared that he had heard from “hundreds of constituents affected by the assault on USAID.” He noted that some were “tearful employees facing job loss for the ‘crime’ of doing important work their country asked them to do,” while others were family members concerned about USAID workers stationed abroad. The original post can be viewed here.

In another tweet posted shortly after, Beyer described the situation at USAID as an “unmitigated disaster for the country and the world.” He emphasized that it was leading to “the spread of disease, starvation, and deaths from preventable causes,” with a particular concern that many who might die if USAID is not restored would be children. This statement is available here.

Further elaborating on February 8, 2025, Beyer warned against dismantling USAID permanently. He stated that such an action would result in losses for America: “The American people will not benefit if USAID is permanently dismantled; they will lose.” He cautioned that this could lead to losing friends globally and increasing adversaries like China gaining influence over nations formerly allied with America.
