Rep. Don Beyer, who represents Virginia’s 8th district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of statements on October 9, 2025, addressing rising health care costs and the potential expiration of tax credits associated with the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

In his first post, Beyer stated, “24 million Americans, including hundreds of thousands of Virginians, get health coverage on Affordable Care Act exchanges. Those plans are going up NOW by thousands of dollars. The price increases facing middle class families in Virginia if these tax credits expire are insane:” (October 9, 2025).

He continued to warn about the timing of these cost increases and attributed responsibility to partisan gridlock. In a follow-up message, Beyer wrote, “Not only is this not an end-of-year problem, it may already be too late to stop some health care cost increases and loss of coverage because of Republican intransigence. Insurers are already locking in higher costs. Further delay will make this worse:” (October 9, 2025).

In a third post, Beyer expanded his criticism of Republican health care policies, highlighting their impact beyond ACA exchanges. He stated, “Republican health care attacks don’t only affect people on Affordable Care Act exchanges. They passed the biggest Medicaid cut ever. Rural clinics in Virginia are already closing. Trump’s tariffs are raising costs. Employer-based plans are affected too:” (October 9, 2025).

Beyer has represented Virginia’s 8th district since 2015, succeeding Jim Moran. He was born in Trieste in 1950 and resides in Alexandria. Beyer holds a BA from Williams College, earned in 1972.

The ACA provides health coverage to millions of Americans through state and federal marketplaces. The expiration of enhanced tax credits could result in significant premium increases for many families. Congressional debates over health care funding and Medicaid have led to uncertainty for patients and providers across the country.
