Rep. Don Beyer, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Virginia’s 8th district, has voiced strong criticism of the Trump Administration’s actions regarding Dr. Badar Khan Suri. Through a series of tweets on May 14, 2025, Beyer expressed his views on the treatment of Dr. Suri and similar cases.

In a tweet posted at 19:33 UTC, Beyer stated that “Dr. Khan Suri was targeted because the Trump Administration wanted to instill fear on American campuses by responding with unnecessarily and illegally draconian force to students and scholars who expressed views they dislike.” He mentioned Judge Giles’ decision regarding Dr. Suri’s release.

Shortly after, at 19:34 UTC, Beyer continued his critique by asserting that “The administration’s treatment of Dr. Badar Khan Suri and the growing list of others like him has been nakedly authoritarian and is a gross betrayal of American values.” He emphasized that this form of persecution against dissent should cease.

Later in the day, at 21:34 UTC, Beyer provided an update on Dr. Suri’s situation, announcing his release with optimism for those involved. He tweeted: “Update: Dr. Badar Khan Suri has been released.” Beyer congratulated Dr. Suri and his legal team while urging continued resistance against what he described as “Trump’s abuses of the Constitution.”

Don Beyer was born in Trieste in 1950 and has served in Congress since replacing Jim Moran in 2015. He resides in Alexandria and holds a BA from Williams College.
