Rep. Don Beyer, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Virginia’s 8th district since 2015, shared his concerns on social media regarding recent developments affecting American science and federal workforce stability. His tweets address the impacts of policies associated with former President Donald Trump and entrepreneur Elon Musk.

On May 10, 2025, Rep. Beyer highlighted the challenges faced by the National Science Foundation (NSF) on its 75th anniversary due to what he described as “the Trump Administration’s destructive attacks threatening American science and innovation.” He urged Congress to take action to safeguard the future of American research and science (“On its 75th anniversary…”).

Later that day, at 15:25 UTC, Beyer expressed concern over “Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s relentless attacks on our federal workforce,” stating that these actions are causing significant harm to communities. He noted that families are struggling with basic needs such as paying bills and putting food on the table due to these pressures (“Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s relentless attacks…”).

In a subsequent tweet posted at 18:00 UTC, Rep. Beyer discussed his visit to Eden Center in Northern Virginia where he engaged with small business owners about the potential effects of Trump’s proposed tariffs. This visit was aimed at understanding firsthand how these tariffs could impact local businesses (“I recently visited the Eden Center…”).

Don Beyer was born in Trieste in 1950 and has lived in Alexandria for many years. A graduate of Williams College with a BA obtained in 1972, he continues to serve his constituents while addressing pressing issues impacting both local communities and national interests.
