Loudoun County Transit and Commuter Services announced on Apr. 7 that Senior Smart Trip cards are now available to county residents age 65 and older. The new card is free, reloadable, and offers a 50% discount on fares for Metro Rail, Metro Bus, Loudoun County Transit’s commuter bus, and other regional transit services that accept Smart Trip.

The initiative aims to make public transportation more accessible and affordable for older adults in the county. By providing discounted fares through an easy-to-use card, the program supports seniors in traveling to shopping centers, social activities, family gatherings, and medical appointments.

“This initiative makes it easier and more affordable for our older adults to travel to shopping centers, social activities, family and medical appointments while also taking full advantage of regional transit options,” said Loudoun County Board of Supervisors Chair At-Large Phyllis J. Randall. “Connecting Loudoun County Transit to the regional Metro network through this benefit is one important part of our commitment to supporting the needs of our older adults as they travel throughout the region.”

Distribution of Senior Smart Trip cards will begin this month at designated locations across Loudoun County. In-person events will be held at senior centers, community centers, libraries, and other sites so seniors can easily enroll by presenting a government-issued photo ID with their date of birth. There is no fee for the initial card; it can be reloaded with value as needed.

Metro General Manager and CEO Randy Clarke said: “Metro is proud to expand our partnership with Loudoun County and make it easier for older adults to access the benefits of the Senior Smart Trip program. As our region grows, initiatives like this help ensure all customers can travel across the Metro system affordably and stay connected to the people, services, and opportunities that matter most.”
