Special election scheduled in Stafford County for vacant District 23 delegate seat

A special election will take place on January 13, 2026, to fill the District 23 seat in the Virginia House of Delegates. The vacancy follows Governor-Elect Abigail Spanberger’s recent appointment of Candi Mundon King as Virginia Secretary of the Commonwealth.

Early voting for the special election begins on January 3, 2026. The deadline to apply for an absentee ballot is January 2, 2026. Early voting and absentee ballot drop-off will be available at the General Registrar’s Office, located at 124 Old Potomac Church Road, Suite 205, Stafford, VA 22554. There will be no early voting at the George L. Gordon, Jr., Government Center.

Early voting hours are set for Monday through Friday from January 5 to January 9 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., as well as two Saturdays—January 3 and January 10—from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Absentee Ballot Drop Boxes will be accessible during these hours and at all polling locations on Election Day from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

The last day to register or make changes to existing voter registration is January 6, 2026.

Voters are encouraged to confirm their polling locations ahead of Election Day. Information about districts and polling places can be found on Stafford County’s Voter Registration page at www.staffordcountyva.gov/voter-registration. This election applies only to House of Delegates District 23, which includes precincts in both Prince William and Stafford counties:

– Mount Ararat – Mt. Ararat Baptist Church
– Staffordboro – Anne E. Moncure Elementary School
– Widewater – Widewater Elementary School
– Barrett Heights – North Stafford High School
– Aquia Episcopal – Aquia Episcopal Church
– Griffis – Kate Waller Barrett Elementary School
– Midway – Shirley Heim Middle School
– Aquia – UFCM Church Auxiliary Building

Stafford County Public Schools enrolled approximately 31,700 students during the 2023-24 school year, an increase from the previous year’s total enrollment of 31,160 students. Among its schools, Brooke Point High School had the highest enrollment with over two thousand students. White students made up nearly 39% of county enrollment, followed by Hispanic students who accounted for about one quarter.
