The Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum in Alexandria will offer a series of specialty tours throughout October. The museum, located at 105–107 S. Fairfax Street, is hosting themed events that focus on historical medicine and its role in the city’s past.
Among the featured tours is “Poisons at the Apothecary Museum,” scheduled for October 4, 18, and 31 from 6 to 7 p.m. This tour examines the history of poisons once found on apothecary shelves and discusses what is known about them today. It is intended for visitors aged 18 and older.
Another event, “Outlandish Apothecary,” will take place on October 19 from 11 a.m. to noon. This program explores herbal remedies described in Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander novels and highlights the importance of apothecaries and women in medicine. This tour is also limited to those aged 18 and up.
A new exhibit titled “Disease and the Apothecary” has recently opened at the museum. The exhibit looks at how diseases such as Smallpox, Yellow Fever, and Influenza have influenced Alexandria’s history, as well as how science and public health efforts have contributed to saving lives. Admission to this exhibit is included with general entry to the museum, and it is free for Alexandria residents. The exhibit can also be accessed online.
Tickets for all specialty tours are available at alexandriava.gov/Shop. Prices are $15 per person or $12 for members of the Office of Historic Alexandria (OHA). Advance purchase is recommended as proceeds support Historic Alexandria’s museums.
“The Office of Historic Alexandria preserves and shares the history of the City of Alexandria with eight museums, historic sites, archives, archaeology, tours, exhibits and public programs. Through powerful storytelling and confronting the City’s past, Historic Alexandria enriches the present and inspires the future. We enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors and serve as a partner in the City’s equity and inclusion initiatives,” according to information provided by OHA staff.
