Stafford County is seeking feedback from residents and drivers who use U.S. Route 1 at the intersections with American Legion Road and Eskimo Hill Road. The county has launched an online survey to collect input as part of the Route 1 at American Legion Road and Eskimo Hill Road Improvement Project, which is currently in the preliminary design phase.
The project aims to improve turning movements and increase safety at these intersections. Planned construction includes the addition of left-turn lanes onto Richmond Highway from both American Legion Road and Eskimo Hill Road, in both northbound and southbound directions. American Legion Road will be widened at Richmond Highway to add a left-turn lane for northbound traffic, while Eskimo Hill Road will be widened to add a left-turn lane for southbound traffic. These changes are intended to boost intersection capacity for vehicles making left turns.
Construction work is scheduled to begin in Fiscal Year 2026, with the start of construction estimated for Fiscal Year 2029. Funding for the project comes from the Virginia SMART SCALE grant program.
The county encourages residents who travel in this area to participate in the online survey to help guide the design process. More information about the project and the survey can be found at https://staffordcountyva.gov/americanlegion.
