Interning at the Chamber

2

Arlington Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on Nov. 23

I first became aware of the Chamber when I was looking for internships to fulfill my graduation requirement at Marymount University. As a political science major, it was evident that I wanted to work for an organization that worked or collaborated with the government. When I learned more about the Chamber’s purpose of working with local and state government on behalf of the business community, I knew this was the job for me.

On the first day of the internship, I didn’t know what to expect or what exactly I would be focusing on. In fact, what I had imagined the internship would be is very generic and cliché like the internships portrayed in movies.

As the Operations Intern, I was given a variety of opportunities, not just to help Chamber staff when needed, but I was given the chance to practice my skills as a political scientist. My favorite part of the internship was attending the Government Affairs & Economic Development Committee meetings via Zoom to gain first-hand experience of the political culture of Arlington and the amazing work of the business community.

Some of my favorite projects I worked on were Arlington Restaurant Week and the Chamber’s 97th Annual Arlington Business Gala. What I enjoyed the most about Arlington Restaurant Week was going restaurant to restaurant to get restaurants to participate in the event and involved the community, as well as display their best dish. What made my heart swell about the Gala was being a part of a team that executed an amazing event from start to finish and seeing the smiles of the attendees.

Working for the Chamber has taught me a lot and helped me sharpen the skills that will allow me to be successful in my future endeavors!
