On January 9, the City of Alexandria will hold a Special Election in School Board District A. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., and voters are encouraged to be prepared. Here are eight important steps that Alexandria voters should take to ensure a smooth and successful Election Day.
Firstly, registered voters in School Board District A have the option to vote early. The deadline to cast an early ballot in person is Saturday, January 6, at 5 p.m. Early voting hours are as follows: Friday, January 5, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, January 6, also from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. This is a convenient way for voters to exercise their right to vote without the potential hassle of long lines on Election Day.
It is crucial for voters to know their designated polling place. If you plan to vote on January 9, make sure to confirm the location and your registration at vote.elections.virginia.gov. You can also call the Office of Voter Registration & Elections at 703.746.4050 or view the City's current precinct map. It is important to be well-informed about where to go to cast your vote.
Take the time to familiarize yourself with what will be on your ballot. The ballot for this election includes a contest for School Board Member District A. To make informed choices, it is recommended that voters review the ballot and conduct research on the candidates before arriving at the polling place. Election officials are not permitted to provide information about candidates, so it is essential for voters to gather information independently.
Virginia voters will be required to show identification (ID) before voting. Examples of acceptable ID include a Virginia driver’s license, voter confirmation documents, a United States passport, employee photo ID, or a student ID. It is important to review the complete list of acceptable forms of identification on the Virginia Department of Elections website. However, voters who do not have an acceptable ID can still vote by signing an ID confirmation statement and using a regular ballot. Alternatively, voters without acceptable identification can vote using a provisional ballot.
To ensure that your vote is counted, make sure to arrive at your polling place on time. If you plan to vote late in the day or after work, be aware that you must be in line at your polling place by 7 p.m. in order to be able to vote.
If you missed the normal registration period, Same Day Registration is available to you. To register and vote on the same day, you must be in the correct locality and at the correct polling location. You will be issued a provisional ballot, and your vote will be cast on this ballot. If you have any questions about the Same Day Registration process, please contact the Office of Voter Registration & Elections at voters@alexandriaVA.gov or 703.746.4050.
The Office of Voter Registration & Elections is dedicated to ensuring that every registered voter can exercise their right to vote. If you have any concerns about the voting process or a voting site, please call 703.746.4050 or notify an election officer for assistance.
Once the polls close at 7 p.m. on Election Day, unofficial results will be posted on the Virginia Department of Elections website. In the weeks following the election, state and local Electoral Boards will review and certify the official results.
