All City of Alexandria government offices will be closed on Monday, January 15, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. In addition to the closure of government offices, there are several other schedule changes and closures that residents should be aware of.
The DASH bus service will operate on a Saturday schedule on January 15, while the administrative offices of the Alexandria Transit Company will be closed. However, the free King Street Trolley will continue to operate from King Street Metro to City Hall/Market Square, providing service every 15 minutes from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
For those interested in adopting a pet, the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with adoptions beginning at noon. In case of an animal emergency or wildlife concern, residents can call 703.746.4444.
The courts in Alexandria will also be closed on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. This includes the General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, Court Service Unit, Circuit Court, and the Clerk of Circuit Court.
All emergency hotlines, including the Child Protective Services Hotline, Domestic Violence Hotline, Emergency Mental Health Services hotline, Adult Protective Services hotline, and Sexual Assault Hotline, will continue to operate 24/7.
Several healthcare facilities in the city will be closed on January 15, including the Alexandria Health Department, Flora Krause Casey Health Center, and the Teen Wellness Center. However, the Freedom House Museum will be open from 1-5 p.m., while all other museums in Alexandria will be closed.
The City's impound lot will be closed on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, as it is on all weekends and observed City holidays. However, fees will continue to accrue on Saturday and Sunday.
All City Libraries will also be closed on January 15, but the Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces and residential permit parking districts. It's important to note that this suspension of enforcement only applies to legal parking spaces and does not allow parking in normally prohibited locations. Temporary no-parking signs will still be enforced.
In terms of recreational facilities, Chinquapin Park Recreation Center and Aquatics Facility, Charles Houston Recreation Center, and Patrick Henry Recreation Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. However, all other City of Alexandria recreation and nature centers will be closed.
Residents should also be aware that residential refuse, recycling, and yard waste collection will be delayed by one day during the week of January 15. The Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Recycling Center will be closed on Monday, January 15. Curbside food waste collection will follow the normal schedule.
