Residents and businesses in the City of Alexandria will have the opportunity to learn about the Stormwater Utility Fee Credit Program and Flood Mitigation Grant Program through a live webinar. The City's Department of Transportation and Environmental Services, Stormwater Management Division, will host the webinar on Monday, January 22, from 7 p.m. - 8 p.m.

During the webinar, the City's staff will provide detailed information about the two programs and answer any questions that participants may have. The Stormwater Utility Fee Credit Program allows property owners to apply for a reduction of up to 50 percent on their SWU Fee by installing and maintaining eligible stormwater management practices on their property. This fee, which is separate from the real estate tax bill, is based on the amount of impervious area on a property and provides funding for the City's stormwater management programs.

According to the City, applications for the Stormwater Utility Fee Credit Program are being accepted until February 15, 2024. The application window opened on December 1, 2023. In regards to the Flood Mitigation Grant Program, property owners can apply for a 50/50 matching grant of up to $5,000 to implement approved flood mitigation practices. This program aims to provide financial incentives for installing flood protection on properties while larger flood mitigation projects are being implemented.

"The Flood Mitigation Grant Program is open to all property owners, and we have removed the requirement to show past flooding," said a representative from the City. "We have also extended eligibility to condo associations, allowing them to apply for a 50/50 matching grant of up to $25,000 for work completed on association common areas."

Applications for the Flood Mitigation Grant Program are accepted on a rolling basis. The City encourages all interested parties to participate in the January 22 webinar, which will be held from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. The webinar is open to the public and will be hosted on the Zoom platform.

For more information about the programs or the webinar, interested individuals can contact Stormwater@alexandriava.gov. The City also provides reasonable disability accommodations upon request. To request such accommodations, individuals can call 703.746.6499 or use Virginia Relay 711.

This webinar presents an excellent opportunity for City of Alexandria residents and businesses to learn about the Stormwater Utility Fee Credit Program and Flood Mitigation Grant Program. By participating in the webinar, individuals can gain valuable information about these programs and how they can benefit from them. It is an important step towards promoting flood resilience in the City and ensuring the well-being of its residents and properties.
