The City of Alexandria is preparing for an upcoming winter weather event as the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the region. The advisory predicts a total snow accumulation of 2-3 inches for the Washington Metropolitan area on Friday, Jan. 19, between 4 a.m. and 7 p.m. In addition, Saturday is expected to bring bitterly cold wind chills with gusty winds and low temperatures.
As a result of these weather conditions, the City has made some adjustments to its operations. City government facilities will open at 10 a.m. on Friday, January 19, and courts will remain closed. Alexandria City Public Schools and school offices will also be closed on Friday. The Department of Transportation & Environmental Services (T&ES), the Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Affairs (RPCA), and the Department of General Services (DGS) have all mobilized their respective winter weather response crews in preparation for the event.
T&ES will provide 24-hour coverage for the duration of the winter weather event, with snow and ice crews ready to respond as needed. RPCA and DGS will also be monitoring the weather and adjusting their response plans accordingly. Urban Forestry will remain on call 24 hours a day.
Residents are advised to exercise caution while traveling and to slow down due to potentially hazardous road conditions. Additionally, extra care should be taken when walking on steps, sidewalks, and driveways, as they may be icy and slippery.
The City of Alexandria has made provisions to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents during this winter weather event. The Winter Shelter at 2355-A Mill Road will be open 24 hours through Monday, January 22, providing a warm and safe space for those in need. Neighborhood recreation centers and Alexandria Libraries will also serve as warming centers during their normal operating hours, with the possibility of extended hours if necessary.
In light of the weather conditions, refuse and recycling collection services, as well as the curbside composting pilot, will be suspended for the rest of the week. Regular collection services are expected to resume next week.
