The City of Alexandria is bracing itself for more snow and bitter wind chills as the National Weather Service (NWS) issues a winter weather advisory. According to the NWS, Alexandria can expect possible additional snow accumulation of one to three inches in the northern areas, while the southern areas may see around one inch of snow. These conditions are expected to cause slippery road conditions, potentially impacting morning commutes. The NWS advises residents to slow down and exercise caution while traveling and to be mindful of the slippery conditions on steps and sidewalks.
In addition to the snow, Saturday is expected to bring bitterly cold wind chills with gusty winds and low temperatures. The high is forecasted to be 27 °F, the low at 18 °F, with a wind chill of 4 °F.
To prepare for these weather conditions, the City of Alexandria has put several measures in place. The Department of Community & Human Services Winter Shelter, located at 2355-A Mill Rd., will be open 24 hours a day until Monday, January 22. This provides a warm and safe place for individuals or households in need of shelter. To contact the Winter Shelter, residents can call 571.652.9984. For more information on services for people experiencing homelessness, transportation, warming centers, and other resources, residents can visit alexandriava.gov/DCHS.
The Department of Transportation & Environmental Services (T&ES) is also taking proactive steps to prepare for the snowfall. T&ES will mobilize its snow and ice crews at 7 p.m. this evening, providing 24-hour coverage throughout the event. The Department of Recreation, Parks, & Cultural Activities (RPCA) will activate its winter weather response crews at the same time. RPCA recreation centers will serve as warming centers during their regular operating hours, with the possibility of extended hours if necessary. A full list of RPCA recreation centers is available on their website.
As the snow response agencies prepare, they are focused on necessary pre-treatment activities, equipment checks, and maintenance. These agencies will monitor and adjust their response plans as needed throughout the weather event.
Residents are also urged to take their own precautions and be prepared for the cold temperatures. The City advises residents to know where they can go to seek warmth if needed, such as restaurants, shopping malls, community centers, or local libraries. It is also recommended to gather supplies in case of power outages and to consider the specific needs of each person, including medication and access to power. Pet owners should ensure their pets have access to warm shelters and plenty of food and water.
To keep homes warm, residents are encouraged to insulate their homes and use caulking and weather stripping to keep out the cold. It is also important to prevent pipes from freezing by allowing faucets to drip and keeping cabinet doors open while ensuring garage doors remain closed.
